Clarence Steel

Brother Clarence Steel was born September 28, 1930 to the late Jimmy and Arnethia Steel in Lapile, Arkansas and passed away in Crossett, Arkansas on September 13, 2018 at the Ashley County Medical Center. He was employed by Georgia-Pacific and retired on January 29, 1993 after 36 years of service.

He attended Strong Public School and confessed Christ at an early age. In 1959, he became a member of Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church in West Crossett, Arkansas and remained a faithful member in good standing until his death. He and the late Deacon James Ellis enjoyed participating in the Harvest Day Programs at Pleasant Green and various churches in the area, demonstrating various items and tools that were used in and around homes in the old days, and singing with the Male Chorus. He was also a supporter of the Socialite Club for his daughter, Shirley Mae Steel Parker.

He united in marriage to the late Ida Mae Lee in Felsenthal, Arkansas on August 29, 1949 and to this union three children were born: Shirley Mae, Clarence Jimmy, and Larry Dale. On November 15, 1955, he united in marriage to the late Marie Wallace Barnes Steel for a period of 51 years.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Larry Dale Steel and Clarence Jimmy Steel; step-sons Luther Barnes, Eddie Barnes, and Lonnie Barnes; siblings Ceola, Leroy, Christine, Clifton, Mamie, Minnie, Lizzie and Simmie. He leaves to cherish his memories his only loving daughter, Shirley Mae Steel Parker, Washington, D.C.; one loving God-daughter, Helen “Cookie” Brown (Charles); one step-son, Earl Barnes (Ola), Urbana, Arkansas; two brothers, John L. Steel and Robert James Steel, Huttig, Arkansas; one loving sister, Pearl Steel Waters, Huttig, Arkansas; special friends and caregivers, Sandra K. Birdner and Rita Brown, Crossett, Arkansas; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services are at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 21, 2018 at Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Walter Witherspoon officiating. Pallbearers are Edgar J. Nalls, Cain Webb, Napoleon Brown, Michael Young, Undra Stanley, and Tony Tatum. Burial will be at Batts Chapel Cemetery in Huttig, Arkansas. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2018 in the Chapel at Jones Funeral Home.
